Boss Mare: The lead mare. She is not mate to either of the herd stallions; her position is one separate from theirs. The boss mare supervises the herd mares, settling disputes between them if the herd stallions are not present to do so or if the situation requires a feminine touch. She also checks to see that the mares are feeding and teaching their foals properly and not abusing them. One duty that she shares with the herd stallion is making sure that no horse leaves The Island without an escort.
